BACKGROUND
Neil Pugach, M.D. was born in Englewood , New Jersey and graduated from Connecticut College, and received his M.D. degree from Boston University Medical School in 1980. He served as an Internal Medicine intern at the Long Beach VA Medical Center in Long Beach, CA, then practiced general medicine in Southern California for 2 years. He subsequently completed 2 years of psychiatry residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, followed by 3 years of neurology residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, CA, graduating in 1988.
He then practiced general neurology in West Los Angeles for 7 years, before relocating to Virginia Beach, VA. He continued to practice general neurology, in Chesapeake, VA for 8 years, before devoting his practice to the treatment of headache disorders.
Dr. Pugach was among the first group of physicians to take and pass the Headache Medicine boards, first offered by the United Council of Neurologic Subspecialties, in 2006. He has continued to practice headache medicine, while also spending 2 years predominantly serving as a principal investigator for clinical drug trials involving new treatments for migraines and psychiatric disorders. This included participation in the PREEMPT trial, the study which led to the first preventive treatment ever approved by the FDA in the US for chronic migraine, i.e., Botox injections.
